If you’re looking to get some fresh sounds from your guitar, a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 coil splitting is a great way to go. Coil splitting is when you use a switch to shut off one of the coils in your humbucker pickup to unlock single-coil tones from your humbucker. The sound will be brighter in tone, but there will also be a sharp drop in output gain, and the pickup will lose its humbucking qualities.

For this post, we will be talking about a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB coil splitting, which is simply a humbucker modification. Two coils are usually used in a humbucker pickup, but a switch can be used to turn one of them off. Splitting the humbucker this way produces a drop in output volume, resulting in access to single coil tones. Single coil tones are typically brighter and more precise than the warm and smooth humbucker sound.
