Mesa Boogie Express 550 Guitar Amp HeadThe Mesa Boogie Express 550 Guitar Amp Head has two channels, each of which features its own Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, Reverb, and Master.

The Express 5:50 Guitar Amp Head is part of a very popular line of amplifiers from the people at Mesa/Boogie. This is a two-channel amplifier that delivers 50 watts of tube-driven power. You can buy the Mesa Boogie Express 550 as a head, or as a combo amp. There are five 12AXY tubes in the preamp section and two 6L6 tubes in the power amp section. The amp gets its name from the Mesa/Boogie Patented Multi-Watt Channel Assignable Power system.

This system allows you to select from the following:

  • one power tube operating in pure Class A Single-Ended, producing 5 Watts
  • two tubes operating in pure Class A Push-Pull, producing 25 watts
  • two tubes operating in the Mesa/Boogie proprietary Dyna-Watt Class A/B power, producing 50 Watts.

The Express 5:50 also features a tube-buffered Spring Reverb, and a tube-buffered effects loop.

Each channel features its own Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, Reverb, and Master controls. Each channel has a toggle switch to alternate between two modes. Channel 1 has Clean or Crunch, and Channel 2 has Blues or Burn. Both channels share a five-band graphic EQ that you can select if you want to use the sliders or a preset contour via toggle switch.

The Express 5:50 also has a separate solo control that supplies a boost to the signal for lead sections. The included four-button footswitch toggles Channels, Reverb, Graphic EQ, and Solo.
