If you tend to use drop-tuning, you may want to consider one of these pedals for maximum results
More and more drop-tuners are writing in, asking what pedals are best for this kind of setup. This is of course very subjective, and in the end, you really have to decide for yourself. But, there are a few pedals out there that have proven to be very helpful with tightening up the low-end. These are of course also very good pedals. You can use the “Search” tool on this page to find full length reviews on any of them. For the purpose of this article, they are recommended particularly for drop-tuning.

Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion Pedal
This a fairly low-budget item but it delivers some pretty serious distortion at a very affordable price. If you are on a tight-budget, this is one to consider. Boss makes very rugged pedals, so you can use this one without a backup. I mention it specifically for this article because it has a dedicated “Low End” control that actully works.

MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion
This is a very new pedal, and it sounds great. There are two key features that might interest those looking to tighten-up the low end. The “Scoop” Switch boost the high-end and low-end while leaving the EQ as-is. you can then tweak the presence control as needed. Also helpful is the fact that there is a dedicated three-band EQ. This means you can really fine-tune not only the bass, but also the mids as it is not always just a matter of adding more end, but the interplay between the mids and the lows that really definesĀ your low-end. A Very affordable distortion pedal with some helpful features.
