Breaking out on the shred scene, while pushing himself in new directions

When most guitarists are on the fast track to breaking out, the last thing on their mind is helping other guitarists. Tim Gibson is an unusual person in that as much as he is clearly focused on his own exciting career, he is also a talented writer who composes articles that help young shredders build their technique.

With a background in viola and classical composition, it is only logical that Tim has a highly disciplined approach to electric guitar. Through this involvement with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, he has had the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition to giving clinics throughout Wisconsin, Tim has also worked with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Not too shabby by anyone’s standards.

Switching from Viola to guitar at age 14, Tim was essentially self-taught until he discovered Tom Hess. Since then he has been a loyal follower of Hess’ “Music Careers Mentoring Program”.  His influences include Dream Theater, Symphony X, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Greg Howe, Joe Stump, George Bellas and Rusty Cooley.

More than just another super-shredder, Tim has built a considerable reputation as a writer for such noted online guitar publications as insaneguitar.com, shredacademy.com, chopsfromhell.com and truthinshredding.blogspot.com. In 2007 Tim completed work as a contributing author for an instructional e-book called “Serious Improvement for the Developing Guitarist” and was featured on a compilation CD released by Tom Hess entitled: “Chronicles: City of Sound”. Partnering with his mentor, Tim worked closely with Tom Hess to develop “The Practice Generator”, a product that helps guitarists maximize their efforts and build a goal-oriented plan for their improvement. All the same time, as word about Tim got out, he was invited to work with artists such as Voodoo Gods and Dimension X. As a result, time has been endorsed by Laguna Guitars, Morley Pedals, Xotic Effects, Dimarzio, Rotosund Strings, Ebtech Audio, Dava Picks, and Guitar Wheel.

With a continuing thirst for new adventures and looking to push himself in new directions, Tim is currently in the woodshed, broadening his style into the areas of country, funk, fusion, R&B and jazz. Clearly a very talented guitarist, Tim has a bright future ahead of him. It is rare to find someone with that kind of world-class technique, who can also write such well crafted and articulate articles.
