There was a time when I would have rolled my eyes at any acoustic guitar that did not have a big ol’ sound hole in the middle and no cutaways. Well I have grown up and I am a much more reasonable guy. The Godin Acousticaster 6 Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar is an awesome blend of Tele-tastic fun and acoustic warmth.
Depending on whether you go for the regular or “Deluxe” model, you are blessed with a Silver Leaf maple or Mahogany chambered body. In either case, the Spruce top provides an excellent balance to the sound (especially with the Mahogany body). What I love most about this guitar is the “Tele-ness” of it all. Let’s face it; if you are a Telecaster player, you really yearn for that same feel in every guitar you pick up (maybe you don’t but I’ve met very few Tele players who did not). Sooner or later, you will have to lay down some acoustic tracks or do a cover gig that requires you to play “Stairway to Heaven.” In either case, if you want to have your cake and eat it too, then you are in great shape here. Heck, even the headstock has that “Tele” look to it. Sorry… I love this stuff.
I’m also pretty keen on the electronics. LR Baggs is not known for making shoddy stuff. You’ve got a nice bridge transducer and three band EQ that should suffice in most situations. I am also a big fan of the 12″ radius. Godin is really making friends more and more these days by providing professional level instruments at a very affordable price.
The fact that the electronics are placed on the front of the body (as opp0sed to the top side) may put some off, but I like it. Aesthetically. it might be an acquired taste, but it certainly is functional.
On to the neck:
Rock Maple is awesome. There are certainly all kinds of choices when it comes to neck wood, and this is highly subjective stuff here, but Maple is simply one of the most reliable woods for guitar. With regards to the neck, you are most likely to enjoy great stability, especially during the change of seasons when adjustments are usually an issue. The Indian Rosewood fingerboard is a perfect match and will definitely feel great beneath your fingers.
Overall, this one is a real stand out. I will admit that for those of you who are not particularly big on Fender Telecasters, this guitar might be a bit much as far as the overall feel and design. Fair enough. But if you do find yourself torn between your love of Telecasters and your need to include acoustic in your repertoire, the Godin Acousticaster 6 Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar is an excellent choice.
