There are few EQ guitar pedals that I feel this strong about. While I will admit that BOSS still has not jumped on the True Bypass bandwagon, that is the only drawback here. Plus, an EQ pedal is one that you are likely to “set-and-forget”, so it’s a bit of a non-issue. What I love so much about this EQ pedal is the level control. I know I’ve blabbed about this in other articles, but I still think it’s very cool that you can use this pedal as a clean boost. It’s kinda like a clean boost with a 7-band EQ added. I know, I know, it’s realy more like a 7-band EQ pedal with a level control, but indulge me here, I don’t get out of the house much these days.
Back to that level control. Effectively, it allows you to drive your favorite tube amp really nicely. You can certainly set the level below flat and use the pedal to cut your signal leve, but that would be a little strange. Anything above flat and you get a nice volume boost. When you dime it, you get a pretty decent breakup that is not too bad at all.
Now of course, the real deal here is that it’s a great EQ pedal. The frequencies are spaced out to be optimized for guitar and it works well. Like most BOSS pedals, it’s built like a friggin’ tank. You can certainly get more boutiquy and you can can also find other EQ pedals that have more EQ bands, but if you need a solid and affordable floor based EQ guitar pedal, the BOSS GE-7 will do just fine.
